Ipratropium Respirator Solution contains 250 mcg Ipratropium Bromide BP.
Ipratropium Respules contains 500 mcg Ipratropium Bromide BP, equivalent to Ipratropium Bromide (anhydrous).
Ipratropium without a prescription
Ipratropium is prescribed to patients who are suffering from any of the following disorders:
- Chronic bronchitis;
Ipratropium is prescribed alone or with other bronchodilators, especially beta-adrenergics, is prescribed as a bronchodilator for maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Ipratropium is usually not prescribed to people who are suffering from any of the following medical disorders:
- Chronic bronchitis;
Ipratropium Side Effects
Stop your treatment with Ipratropium and inform your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of the following side effects:
- Difficulty in breathing;
- Racing heartbeat;
- Swelling of the tongue lips face;
- Throat closing;
More common side effects are:
- Blurred vision;
- Dry mouth;
Ipratropium Drug Interactions
You should not take Ipratropium if you are also taking:
- Scopolamine (Transderm-Scop);
- Popantheline (ProBanthine);
- Methscopolamine (Pamine);
- Methantheline (Banthine);
- Mepenzolate (Cantil);
- Dicyclimine (Quarzan);
- Clidinium (Donnatal);
The usual dosage of Ipratropium Respules is 500 mcg (1 unit-dose vial) administered three to four times a day by oral nebulization, with doses 6-8 hours apart.
Ipratropium is intended only for inhalation with suitable nebulizing devices and should not be taken orally or administered parenterally.
The recommended dose of Ipratropium Respirator Solution is to be diluted with physiological saline to a final volume of 3-4 ml, and nebulized and inhaled until the solution is consumed.
Adults and Children Over 12 Years of Age
250-500 mcgs, three to four times daily.
For the Treatment of Acute Bronchospasm
Repeated doses can be administered until the patient is stable. Daily doses exceeding 2 mg in adults and children over 12 years of age should only be given under medical supervision.
Children (6-12 Years of Age)
250 mcg; up to a total daily dose of 1 mg.
Children (0-5 Years of Age)
For the Treatment of Acute Asthma Only
125-250 mcg; up to a total daily dose of 1 mg
Ipratropium should be administered no more frequently than 6-hourly in children less than 5 years of age.
Ipratropium is contraindicated in known or suspected cases of hypersensitivity to ipratropium bromide, or to atropine and its derivatives.
